All About Zircon

While we hold a deep appreciation for the Big Three, at MADLY, we also take great delight in shining a light on some lesser-known gems. It’s not uncommon for our clients to come in with a specific gemstone in mind, only to find themselves captivated by another gem they’ve never encountered before!

One such gemstone that frequently flies under the radar is Zircon. Over the years, we’ve witnessed Zircon gradually emerge into its own, yet its journey is often hindered by its name, leading it to be mistakenly associated with Cubic Zirconia — a synthetic simulant.

So, let’s dispel the confusion between Zircon and Cubic Zirconia once and for all.

While their names may sound similar, their origins and properties couldn’t be more distinct. Cubic Zirconia is a man-made gemstone synthesised in laboratories, often utilised as a cost-effective substitute for Diamonds and other natural gems. On the other hand, Zircon is a naturally occurring mineral, painstakingly formed deep within the earth’s crust over millions of years. In fact, it’s one of the oldest minerals on earth, with some crystals being dated as over 4 billion years old!

What is Zircon?

Zircon’s name is derived from the Persian word “zargun,” which means “gold-coloured,” a nod to its diverse colour spectrum. From fiery oranges and vibrant yellows to icy blues and earthy greens, Zircon showcases a kaleidoscope of hues that not all gems can boast.

Ancient civilizations prized Zircon for its supposed healing properties and its ability to bring wisdom and prosperity to its wearer. In the Middle Ages, Zircon adorned royalty and clergy, symbolising purity and spiritual enlightenment.

Why Zircon?

Zircon comes in a variety of colours, though it’s most popular in its blue form (heat-treated and/or irradiated to attain its colour). Besides that, there are a few reasons why it stands out.

Brilliance: Zircon is renowned for its impressive brilliance, which refers to its ability to reflect light and sparkle intensely. With a high refractive index, Zircon possesses a fiery brilliance that rivals even that of Diamond.

Fire: Fire, also known as dispersion, is a phenomenon that occurs when white light enters a gemstone and is separated into its spectral colours, creating flashes of rainbow hues. Zircon is celebrated for its exceptional fire, with vivid spectral flashes that dance across its surface.

If you ask me, Zircon is a gemstone that deserves more attention and appreciation! Despite its undeniable beauty, Zircon remains relatively underrated in comparison to other gemstones. But hey, that just makes it more intriguing, right?

So come visit MADLY and let the lively energy of Zircon steal your heart! 😉
