Growing up means realising that the thrill of instant gratification, though exciting, often fades quickly. Self-care, for me, is now about doing things that bring joy — not just in the moment, but in a lasting, meaningful way. While I can never quite escape my guilty pleasures — omakase, expensive facials, and spontaneous escapades — these days, I’m leaning more and more towards buying myself jewellery.
It’s funny considering I never thought I was “that girl,” but now? All that’s on my mind is my next piece. That delicious meal? Gone in an hour. That facial? Time to schedule the next one. But the jewellery I buy for myself? That’s forever.
They say money can’t buy happiness, but I disagree.
It’s all about how you spend your money. Unlike fleeting indulgences, jewellery provides lasting happiness because you can wear it every day, revelling in its beauty and the way it makes you feel! Each time I put it on, I instantly feel like a strong, confident woman — it’s a small act of self-care in its own right.
When I invest in a piece of jewellery, I’m not just adding another ‘bauble’ to my collection. Each piece becomes a reminder of what I’ve accomplished, and there’s something incredibly gratifying in knowing it’s my way of recognising my worth, instead of waiting for someone else to do it for me. After all, there’s something deeply empowering about buying your own jewellery.
Now, don’t get me wrong — I’m just a girl, and fancy dinners will always have their place, but they come and go.
If there’s anything I’ve learned in this past year, it’s that jewellery doesn’t lose its charm or value.
In fact, it becomes even more meaningful over time, especially when it’s tied to a person or a special moment. Each piece becomes a precious heirloom to pass down, carrying memories, stories, and emotions that deepen with every wear.
For so long, women have been shamed for spending money on “frivolous” things. But why feel embarrassed about spending the money we’ve worked so hard for?
So yes, it would be nice if someone else bought me jewellery, but in the meantime, I’m more than happy to treat myself. After all, who knows my taste better than I do? And there’s something incredibly satisfying about saying, “I bought this for me. Because I’m worth it.”

P.S. The beauty of bespoke jewellery at MADLY is that it takes time! It forces you to pause, to consider what you truly want instead of jumping straight into a purchase. It’s a process, one where you think about what this piece should say, the meaning it carries, and how it reflects who you are. It’s not just another impulsive splurge; it’s thoughtful, intentional, and uniquely yours.
P.P.S. Fun pieces have their place too! Self-care can be about celebrating the joy of both — whether it’s a heirloom ring or a playful addition to your collection!
